Amazon seller fees: every fee Amazon charges US sellers (2026)

By Harry Burman · Updated October 15, 2026

Amazon seller fees come in two layers. Every seller pays a selling plan fee and a referral fee on each sale. Sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) also pay per-unit fulfillment fees and fees for storage, inbound placement, low stock, old stock, returns and removals. Here's each one, with Amazon's amounts as of October 15, 2026.

Amazon charges US sellers a selling plan fee and a referral fee on every sale, plus more fees if Amazon stores and ships the product through FBA. As of October 15, 2026, the Professional plan costs $39.99 a month while you have active listings, and the Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold. Referral fees are a percentage of the total price, set by category, and media items pay a $1.80 closing fee on top. FBA sellers pay a fulfillment fee per unit plus a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge, monthly storage by cubic foot, and an inbound placement fee unless they split shipments the way Amazon asks. Depending on stock levels and returns, they can also pay low-inventory-level, aged inventory, returns processing, removal and disposal fees. Add them up per unit before you set a price or an ad budget.

Amazon Ads aren't on the list: Amazon's pricing page calls them an optional service with added costs.

Selling plan fees: Individual or Professional

  • Individual: no monthly fee, and $0.99 for each item sold. You list one product at a time and set static prices.
  • Professional: $39.99 a month, charged only in months with active listings, and no per-item fee. Amazon's pricing page lists bulk listing tools, Amazon Ads, brand tools and Automate Pricing among what it adds.

On plan fees alone, Professional is cheaper once you sell more than 40 items a month ($39.99 ÷ $0.99). Very large catalogs also pay a high-volume listing fee of $0.001 per SKU a month above the first 1.5 million SKUs.

Referral, closing and refund fees

Every sale pays a referral fee: a percentage of the total price the buyer pays, including shipping and gift wrap, or a per-item minimum, whichever is greater. The rate depends on the product's fee category, and the Amazon referral fees guide lists every category's rate and minimum.

  • Closing fee. $1.80 per item sold in Books, DVD, Music, Software and Computer/Video Games, Video Game Consoles and Video Game Accessories.
  • Refund administration fee. When you refund a buyer, Amazon returns your referral fee minus the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of it. Amazon's example: refunding a $10.00 item with a 15% referral fee ($1.50) costs $0.30.

FBA fulfillment fees

If Amazon picks, packs and ships your orders, you pay a fulfillment fee per unit. It depends on the size tier, the shipping weight and the price, with separate rates for items under $10, $10 to $50, and over $50.

  • Since April 17, 2026, Amazon adds a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to the fee.
  • Holiday peak rates apply from October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027. Amazon charges the fee when the unit ships, so an order placed before October 15 and shipped after pays the peak rate.
  • Extra-large items over 96 inches long, or 130 inches in length plus girth, also pay an Overmax handling fee.

The Amazon FBA fee calculator finds your product's size tier and fee from Amazon's 2026 rate cards.

Storage fees: monthly and aged inventory

Amazon charges storage on the average space your inventory takes up each day, in cubic feet, and bills it the following month.

  • Base monthly storage fee. Standard-size items pay $0.78 per cubic foot from January to September and $2.40 from October to December. Oversize items pay $0.56 and $1.40.
  • Surcharge for slow-selling stock. Professional sellers past their first 365 days who store 25 cubic feet or more of a size tier, with more than 22 weeks of stock at their recent shipping rate, pay $0.44 to $1.88 more per cubic foot (standard size) on inventory over 30 days old.
  • Aged inventory surcharge. Charged on units stored 181 days or longer, counted on the 15th of each month. It starts at $0.50 per cubic foot and rises to $7.90 per cubic foot or $0.35 per unit, whichever is greater, after 456 days.

Inbound placement and low-inventory-level fees

  • Inbound placement service fee. Send a shipment to one location (minimal splits) and Amazon charges per unit to spread it across its network: $0.14 to $0.32 for small standard items and $0.20 to $1.90 for large standard, by weight. Sending to five or more locations yourself (Amazon-optimized splits) is free, but needs at least five identical cartons or pallets per item.
  • Low-inventory-level fee. Added to every unit shipped when both your 30-day and 90-day historical days of supply are under 28 days: $0.32 to $0.89 per unit for small standard items and $0.36 to $1.11 for large standard. New Professional sellers are exempt for 365 days, as are products selling fewer than 20 units a week, and Grocery.

New sellers who send their first shipment within 90 days of listing get $400 in inbound placement credits, Amazon's fee page says.

Returns, removal and disposal fees

  • Returns processing fee. Most products pay only on returns above a category threshold, such as 8.1% for Home and Kitchen: $1.78 to $2.21 per unit for small standard items. Apparel and shoes pay on every return, from $1.65. Products that shipped fewer than 25 units in a month are exempt.
  • Removal and disposal fees. Charged per unit when you remove stock or have Amazon dispose of it. Standard-size units cost $0.84 up to 0.5 lb, $1.53 up to 1 lb, $2.27 up to 2 lb, then $2.89 plus $1.06 per pound above 2 lb.

Worked example: fees on one product

A made-up kitchen gadget sells for $24.99 in Home and Kitchen. Packed, it's 8 × 6 × 4 inches and 0.75 lb, so it falls in the large standard tier, billed at its dimensional weight of 1.38 lb. The seller is on the Professional plan, sells 400 units a month through FBA, and each unit sits in storage about a month. Amazon's fees per unit during the holiday peak:

A made-up product. Amazon's US fees as published on October 15, 2026.
FeePer unit
Referral fee (15% of $24.99)$3.75
FBA fulfillment, peak ($5.73 + $0.20 surcharge)$5.93
Inbound placement, minimal splits (top of range)$0.50
Storage, 0.11 cu ft × $2.40$0.27
Professional plan ($39.99 ÷ 400)$0.10
Total Amazon fees$10.55
fees per unit = referral + fulfillment + placement + storage + plan ÷ units
             = $10.55, or 42% of the $24.99 price

Off-peak, fulfillment would be $5.61 and storage $0.09. The low-inventory and returns fees stay at zero while stock covers 28 days and returns stay under 8.1%. Take off the product cost and what's left is the margin your ads must fit inside: the Amazon profit calculator runs it per unit and per month, and what is contribution margin? explains why it matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon charge to sell?

Every seller pays a selling plan fee ($39.99 a month on Professional, or $0.99 per item on Individual) and a referral fee on each sale. FBA sellers also pay fulfillment, storage and other inventory fees.

Is the Amazon Professional plan worth it?

On plan fees alone, Professional ($39.99 a month) costs less than Individual ($0.99 per item) once you sell more than 40 items a month.

What fees does FBA charge?

A fulfillment fee per unit plus a 3.5% surcharge, monthly storage, inbound placement if you ship to fewer locations, and, depending on stock and returns, low-inventory-level, aged inventory, returns, removal and disposal fees.

How do I avoid the low-inventory-level fee?

Keep at least 28 days of supply. Amazon only charges it when both your 30-day and 90-day historical days of supply are under 28 days.

Does Amazon refund fees when I refund a buyer?

It refunds the referral fee minus the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of it. On a $10.00 item with a 15% referral fee, you keep paying $0.30.
